COVID-19 worsened food insecurity in New York to unprecedented levels, with the average number of people served by food pantries citywide doubling to that of pre-pandemic levels. In Brownsville— a neighborhood disproportionately affected by both COVID and pre-existing food insecurity—the leaders of Collective Fare and Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance Foundation are sustaining their community through both short-term hunger and long-term food apartheid.
